Beach Barber Tract

Located in the heart of La Jolla, near famed WindanSea Beach, and the secluded beaches of Sea Lane and Marine Street are the Beach-Barber Tract. Originally called “Neptunia” in the late 1800s, it was renamed in the 1920s for landowner Phillip Barber and for Windansea Beach, which is celebrated for its top-notch surfing and soothing orange sunsets.

The Beach-Barber neighborhood has a relaxed, beachy feel to it, compared to most other parts of La Jolla. The atmosphere and the dress are very casual, including bathing suits and flip-flops most days of the year.

One of the best parts of living in Beach-Barber is that it is within walking distance of some of the best things La Jolla has to offer, including the Village, the Beach, and award-winning local public schools. (La Jolla Elementary School, Muirlands Middle School, and La Jolla High School) The neighborhood spreads east to Fay Avenue, south past Bonair Street, north to Marine Street, and west to the ocean.

Beach-Barber is mostly residential, but La Jolla Boulevard, its main thoroughfare, is lined with a variety of shops and restaurants. Some local favorites include The Shack, Nautilus Tavern, Promiscuous Fork, Café Vahik, and La Clochette Coffee Shop.

Many Beach-Barber homes were built in the early 1940s and designed by some of the finest architects San Diego had to offer. East of La Jolla Boulevard, many of the homes are charming English-style cottages; while west of the Boulevard, you can find exquisite oceanfront homes. Condominium residences are also available in this cherished area.

Aside from swimming, surfing, and sunbathing at the beach, outdoorsy residents can also bike or jog along the scenic La Jolla Bike Path. Less hectic than the Village but more exciting than Upper Hermosa and Lower Hermosa to the south, it’s an ideal choice for a life in balance. A typical day here is sunny and 68 degrees - perfect conditions for a life in paradise.
