Welcome to Scripps Ranch

Community history

Scripps Ranch is a bedroom community in the northeastern part of San Diego. It is located east of Interstate 15, North of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and South of Poway. A unique feature of Scripps Ranch is its landscaping, which includes many mature eucalyptus trees that are most apparent along Pomerado Road. Miramar Reservoir is located within Scripps Ranch and offers recreational boating and fishing.

Home of the eucalyptus

Developed in 1976, it offers an oasis of desert-like sagebrush area north of the downtown. Once inside this heavily wooded and desirable community, eucalyptus trees tower and cool beautiful residential neighborhoods. Home styles are diverse, ranging from adult living on Miramar Reservoir to sprawling single family homes surrounded by spacious greenbelts and parks.

E.W. Scripps

Newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps and his beloved half-sister, Ellen Browning Scripps, purchased 400 acres of what is today Scripps Ranch for $5,000. Only 30 acres were to be E.W.’s, for his home and grounds and the rest would belong to Ellen. Eventually he acquired 2,100 acres, and he immediately started to build what he thought would be a “winter” home, to which he could escape during the cold months in Illinois. By 1900 it became the family’s year round house. He loved the quality of life it afforded him and his family, just as the residents of Scripps Ranch do today.
